Does anyone know what the words Auld Lang Syne actually mean and just what the song is saying? "Should old acquaintance be forgot...etc, are they saying If you have forgotten just let it be water under the bridge ..or.. if you have forgotten those you should remember from the past try to give some thought to them. Or is it saying any of that at all. We sing it at New Years but I don't know anyone that knows why or what it means. Thanks.
Here's a translation, which you can see refers to a friendship between childhood friends who have been parted and met again. Literally it means that for the sake of our long friendship we should join hands and share a drink together in the spirit of good will. To extend that meaning it means that we should not forget our old friends and celebrate reunion with them.

The translation is perfect, as is the comment about Burns. Now, when you sing it, please note, it's 'Auld' ('a' as in 'father'), not "old", and 'syne' starts with an 'S' NOT a 'z'!!. "Zyne" is not a Scottish word... nor even an English one. Do you say "long zince?" Happy Hogmanay.
