Why do scientist say that cats and dogs only see in black and white and that birds dont have tast buds, then why is it that birds are picky and only like to eat certain treats. How do they know when they arent the animal. Couldnt it be maybe that animals bodies are just different from us?
Dogs do not only see in black and white to be absolutely correct. Dogs do not have the ability to see the breadth of color that humans do even though they have both rods and cones. If a human can't see red or green they could be deemed color blind.
Scientists have observed cat and dog behavior and over many trials have seen that dogs and cats do not react to subtle changes in color when all else is the same; therefor we assume that means they are colorblind.
Yet what does colorblind mean to a dog? If I ask you to describe the color "red" you may give me examples of things that are red or descriptions of heat as being "red" but that may not mean anything to me. We have no concept of how a dog truly thinks. we can see actions, but not thoughts.
The same is true of birds, it is simply an educated guess based upon observation of what they eat and the fact that (for example) birds have a very poor sense of smell. If you pick up a baby bird and put it back into the nest the mother bird will not reject it as the urban legend goes. We understand that our sense of smell and taste are closely linked so we think a birds must be as well.
Now that we can see into the human brain as it functions and can see which part of the brain reacts to certain stimulus we can figure out what may be wrong when a human how do cats seeis colorblind or can not taste. We will then make comparisons to animal brain activity and observation to make similarities. It may be wrong, but they are our best hypotheses.
